the place.
peninsula, hong kong, 1928.
In 1928, the Kadoorie brothers opened the Peninsula on the Kowloon side of Victoria Harbour, right across from where the ocean liners docked. It was meant to be the finest hotel east of the Suez, and for a few decades it was. The lobby held twice-weekly tea dances, Charlie Chaplin and Clark Gable came through, and the rooftop was the most fashionable place to be in colonial Hong Kong.
The art on this pair is a painting of the rooftop pool. Jade water, cream swimmers, terracotta for the deck, a single black mountain.
