the place.
piscine molitor, paris, 1929.
In 1929, architect Lucien Pollet finished Piscine Molitor in the 16th arrondissement, a short walk from Roland-Garros. The building looked like an ocean liner in concrete and glass, with two pools inside, three levels of yellow changing cabins, and art deco stained glass by Louis Barillet. Johnny Weissmuller opened it that summer before he became Tarzan. In 1946, Louis Réard introduced the bikini there.
The art on this pair is a painting of the outdoor pool from above. Indigo water, amber tile, a cream deck, a single figure reclining at the edge in the Blue Nudes style.
